moab has been my home for 18 years. i moved to the dusty desert town when i was 21 years old and, without really being conscious of it, created a life here. i have since built a business photographing the love stories of visitors and have been privileged enough to be asked to travel to and fro to document weddings and engagements and elopements in some of the most beautiful places i have ever seen.
all the while, life goes on in our town. in 2020, during covid, when we were all at a loss with what to do, i photographed my friends and neighbors outside of their homes. i called these the porch sessions and now, six years later, they are still some of my favorite images i have ever taken.
the idea behind the moab people project was born out of the porch sessions and is very simple:
to photograph as many residents of our town as possible, at their homes, possibly with a few items that represent why they believe they live here. in my experience, there is always a reason. this is not the easiest place to live, it is not the cheapest, housing can be expensive and well-paying jobs can be hard to come by. the summers bring temperatures over 100 and the winters can be dreary and well below freezing. there aren't many resources available.
but we are here, a small rural community, and we all have our why.
