Most of the couples I’m lucky enough to photograph are not from Moab. I can’t say for certain, but I would imagine that this might be different for photographers in larger, more populated areas. I rarely get to meet couples in person before their big day. Instead, we usually get to hop on a phone call or FaceTime (hello, awkward me in front of my computer’s camera!).  Ashley, Victor, and I didn’t have the chance to meet before their elopement in Arches National Park, so the first time I met them was in the parking lot of the visitors center, just under an hour before they were scheduled to say “I do”.

We hopped in our cars and headed a short ways up into the park. The weather had been iffy that week, just raining a little, but I’ll always shoot in any kind of weather. Rain, snow, I’ll take it. I often love how the desert looks in weather other than our typical sunshine and blue skies. Don’t get me wrong, I grew up in southern California and will take sunshine over pretty much anything else, but when it comes to photography I genuinely love pushing myself creatively, trying to see landscapes I’ve hiked through and explored literally hundreds of times in a new light (or lack thereof).  So anytime I have a wedding or couples session booked and it’s looking like there’s going to be some weather, I’m stoked.

The clouds were thick and hung low throughout the ceremony, creating a beautiful, soft light the entire time. After their intimate gathering with just close friends and family, the three of us headed further into the park to take some portraits of just the two of them. We visited balanced rock and guess what? NO ONE WAS THERE! Anyone who had been to Arches National Park knows that that is a rarity, to say the least. We stopped just for a few minutes, but it was long enough to witness the sun peek it’s little face out through the clouds. From there we headed to the windows section, one of my favorite spots in Arches, to finish up the evening taking pictures beneath those magical frames.

But I have to say, my favorite part of Ashley and Victor’s wedding weekend was the bridal session they scheduled the day after their wedding. I LOVE that couples are starting to carve out more time for these sessions. It allows us to explore a different area, you end up with tons more photos in a different location, plus you get an excuse to wear that gorgeous dress at least one more time.

Dead Horse Point did what it is notorious for doing – it showed off all that gorgeous, golden desert light, filling the canyons just as the sun started to dip down below the horizon. The photos of the two of them bathed in that golden hour light are some of my favorites to date. I can’t thank the two of them enough for asking me in for the weekend to capture such a beautiful celebration of their love, and the beginning of their adventurous life together. Thank you! And hey, happy holidays to you and yours. xo

rachel + jamie / arches national park wedding

in one of Rachel's first e-mails to me she described where she and her now husband, Jamie, are from, and how they came to fall in love with the the outdoors together, especially this little town of moab. she knew she wanted their ceremony location to be at delicate arch, but she was open to everything else. i knew i liked her right away, the way she described all the places they'd travelled together, but this was what really struck me:

“we want a small, simple ceremony. having it in a venue like this is US and it is what WE are about. so capturing the beauty and magic of the place and event is what we hope for. :)”

YES. so much YES. that is exactly what i hope to do for couples, capture the magic of the place and the connection of the two individuals in it. they wanted to make the hike up to delicate in their full wedding attire, both because they knew it’d be something they’d always remember, and also because the walk wouldn’t be easy, but the view at the top would be one hundred percent worth it. an apt metaphor for relationships I’d say.

when the day finally came this past march i picked Rachel up in town where she was getting her hair done by the amazingly talented Lindsey Knowles Vaccaro (check her out if you are looking for a hair stylist!). Lindsey did a fabulous job, as always, so Rachel and i hugged and hopped in my car to go meet Jamie at double arch for their first look.

afterward, hiking boots and all, we made the trek up to delicate arch, receiving tons of “oh my gosh are you getting married now?!” and “you look amazing!” comments. i love this about weddings: they are centered around pure joy, and it felt like the two of them were sharing that elation with everyone we passed along the way.

when we got to the top we took a moment to take in the view. no matter how many times i’ve hiked up to that famous arch, it still leaves me in awe when i turn that final corner. i could tell it did the same to Rachel and Jamie, which made me love them even more.

Rachel told me that she’d really like to have their short ceremony directly under the arch. i told her that i was absolutely up for it, but in all honesty i was a bit nervous! if you’ve been to delicate during the high season then you know there’s literally a line of people in the bowl, waiting to have their photo taken beneath it. i was worried that folks would be rude and try to hurry them along, which is definitely not something you want on your wedding day.

we set all of our bags down nearby and got ready to get in line. but the thing was...there wasn’t a line. for some reason at that very moment everyone sort of stepped away. the two of them walked out to meet Christy, their officiant, beneath the arch all by themselves. they had a short and beautiful exchange of vows, taking in the wonder and appreciating the place they were in. and THEN! when it was finally time to make it official, Christy raised her voice and announced to the 50 or 60 people who were watching that these two were now man and wife and would Jamie please kiss his bride. the crowd cheered and I got to witness one of the most unique ceremonies i’d ever seen!

thank you, Rachel and Jamie, for sharing your day with me. if there's one thing i learned from you two it's that true love undoubtedly exists. i can't wait to hear about the adventures in store for you both! xo

i loved everything about amanda and travis's wedding day. a small, intimate ceremony with close family and friends; a relaxed reception in town; and the most spectacular location for them to say their "i do's". they were married under sand dune arch in arches national park on a perfect day in september. usually i write a lot more, but i think these photos speak for themselves: these two truly love each other, and i was lucky enough to capture that pure happiness for them this fall. thank you! happy new year all.

shears family + friends // family portraits

you never know who you are going to meet. i keep getting lucky in my work, encountering the kindest, warmest, and funniest families from all over the world. these two families were no exception. i had so much fun showing them all a little pocket of arches national park, a spot where the light seems to always glow beautifully. thank you so much for coming out this way and letting me scramble up rocks to chase your hilarious and adventurous boys. :)

m + j // wedding

phew. i'm not quite sure what happened to this past month, but i do know that one of the highlights from this spring was getting to photograph matthew + jeffrey's beautiful ceremony at arches national park. after that day i felt like we were old friends, and i cannot say enough how happy i am to have met the two of them and their fabulous friends and family! a stunning ceremony; a ton of laughter (and the good kind of tears); and gumbo made in louisiana, freeze-dried, then driven all the way out to moab? it couldn't have been a more perfect day. thank you matthew and jeffrey. :)

c + k // delicate arch proposal

when camille called and asked if i'd be willing to photograph her asking her girlfriend to marry her, at sunrise, at delicate arch, i was all over it. we immediately started scheming and planning, and i found myself getting butterflies for her that morning as i hiked up to the arch under the milky way. congratulations you two. :) thank you for asking me to be a part of it all.
